Jeremy Vlcan is an oil painter based in Omaha, Nebraska.
Most of the work begins outdoors. A plein air study is painted on location in a single sitting — usually 9 x 12 or 10 x 12 inches, small enough to carry and finish before the light moves. Some of those studies stay as they are. Others become the basis for larger studio paintings, where the same subject is worked out at scale.
The subjects are mostly the country he can drive to: the Nebraska sandhills, the Elkhorn and Niobrara valleys, the streets of Dundee, the view out of a plane window on the way out of Omaha. More recently, the California coast and the golden hills west of Denver.
On Location
Every plein air painting has a place and a day attached to it. This is where those get written down — what the weather was doing, what changed while the painting was being made, and what the site actually looks like next to the finished work.
